The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team opened its 2013 season today with a pair of shutout wins on the first day of the 44th annual Oneonta Invitational.  The Red Dragons swept both Emmanuel and St. Lawrence in straight sets to begin the fall campaign 2-0.

Oneonta's first match was versus Emmanuel and the Red Dragons won by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-19.

Sophomore Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) led the Oneonta attack with 11 kills.  Classmate Kristina Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) led the defense with 16 digs.  Freshman Paige Carpluk (Yaphank/Bellport) added 11 digs in her first collegiate match.  Senior Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union-Endicott) had four blocks to lead Oneonta to go with nine kills.

Oneonta defeated St. Lawrence 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23.

Darpino led Oneonta with six kills while adding four blocks.  Carpluk had four blocks as well along with a team high 12 digs.

The Red Dragons will play Kean University and SUNY Potsdam tomorrow to conclude this year's tournament.  Oneonta will play Kean at 10am and Potsdam at 2pm.
