Oneonta, N.Y. – SUNY Oneonta sophomore Nicole Marzillo drove in three runs including one via a homerun in the second inning in powering the Red Dragons to a 9-3 come from behind victory in game 1 of a doubleheader sweep today against visiting SUNY Potsdam. Marzillo's round tripper helped the Red Dragons overcome a 3-0 deficit.
Oneonta (5-13/3-5) scored 7 runs on 6 hits in the fifth inning to take the lead 9-3. Junior Tricia Kendziera started it off with a walk and scored on a Kalyn Deso triple to right center. Katie O'Flynn followed with a single scoring Deso. With the bases loaded and after another walk and single, freshman Hunter Bassett stepped up and hit a line shot up the middle scoring the third off the inning. Marzillo singled, bringing home three more runs.
Potsdam (6-10/0-8) got on the board early with two runs in the first inning and added another run in the second. Senior Heather Johnson (Heuvelton/Heuvelton) singled to left field and stole second to start the Bears off. Amanda Thayer followed suit with a single and Amanda Perry plated the two runs with a single her own. Thayer went 3-for-3 and Perry provided 2 hits and 2 runs batted in.
The Red Dragons pounded out 9 hits in the opener including two hits from Deso, O'Flynn, Brianna Rivera and Marzillo.
O'Flynn picked up her third win of the season going the distance, allowing eight hits, three earned runs and striking out six batters.
In the second game, Oneonta got on the board in the first and second innings, scoring 1 and 4 runs respectively.
Kendziera started the game off with a single and Chandler Campbell laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to second. Deso hit a line shot toward the third baseman scoring Kendziera, who had advanced to third on a passed ball.
Sophomore Rivera hit her second double of the season to lead off the second inning. Bassett hit Rivera in with a single to right center. A walk loaded the bases for Campbell, who laced a shot to left center field for a double, scoring two more runs. Deso scored Campbell with a shot to right field for the last run of the game.
The runs were all sophomore Rachel Hitt needed as she shut out the Bears. Hitt faced 29 batters, striking out 7 and allowing 6 hits to earn her second win of the season.
Rivera had two hits in the second game and Campbell and Deso each had a pair of runs batted in.
The Red Dragons will be in action again on Monday, April 8
th as they host SUNY Canton for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
