Oneonta, N.Y. – SUNY Oneonta picked up two victories today against SUNY Canton in non-conference action, taking game 1, 10-0 in five innings and game 2, 7-6 in eight innings. Sophomore Katie O'Flynn threw a one-hitter in game 1 to earn her fourth victory of the season.
Game one ended in the fifth inning when freshman Meaghan Foster hit a deep shot over the left field fence to end the game by bringing home three runs for the Red Dragons 10-0 win.
All of Oneonta's (7-13) scoring took place with two outs. The Red Dragons took the lead in the first inning, plating three and adding another in the third before scoring six in the fifth inning. Tricia Kendziera started the game off with a walk and stole second. After two ground outs, Traci Lichtenstein singled up the middle to score Kendziera. Senior Kalyn Deso then stepped to the plate and hit a shot over the fence to add two more runs. The homerun is Deso's first of the season.
In the bottom of the fifth with the score at 4-0, Lichtenstein started the inning off with a double to right field. Deso singled to left field and moved Chandler Campbell, who came in to pinch run for Lichtenstein, to third. Campbell scored on a wild pitch. A walk, an error and another single set the stage for Foster's big hit.
O'Flynn pitched five scoreless innings, striking out eight Roos in the process.
In game 2, Oneonta had a 5-2 lead going into the seventh, when Canton (9-13) came storming back to take a 6-5 lead. Destiny Petty (Flushing/North Country CC) started the Roos off when she beat the throw to first on an infield single. Sharon Cordero (Goshen/Goshen High) followed with a single, advancing Petty. Nicole Mulieri (Afton/Herkimer CC) then doubled through the left side bringing home Petty. After a hit batter, Andrea Rogers (Munnsville/Herkimer CC) doubled to left center to bring home 2 more.
The bottom of the seventh and down a run, Lichtenstein hit a shot down the right field line for a single. Sophomore Gemma Mahoney came in to pinch run and Bassett moved Mahoney over to second with a ground out. Up to the plate stepped Laura Campbell, who singled through the right side tying the game at 6-, scoring Mahoney.
Pitcher, Rachel Hitt, shut out the Roos in the top of the eighth inning.
Kendziera got things started in the bottom of the inning with a single down the left field line. Nicole Brieva got on base on a fielder's choice and Deso became the hero with a double to right center to put Brieva across the plate for the winning run.
Hitt picked up her third victory of the season on a two hit and nine strike out afternoon.
Lichtenstein went 4-for-4 on the afternoon and both Chandler and Laura Campbell went 3-for-4 in the second game. Deso provided six runs batted in for the Red Dragons.
Oneonta will next be in action at home on Friday, April 12
th when they play host to SUNYAC rival Brockport in a doubleheader matchup set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
