The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team hung tough for three quarters today against the No. 1 team in Division III before the rival Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland pulled away in the fourth en route to a 13-6 win today. The loss for Oneonta (2-8/0-2 SUNYAC) was its third straight while Cortland (10-0/2-0 SUNYAC) remained undefeated.
Oneonta led after the first quarter 2-1 thanks to a solid defense and efficient use of the clock. After Cortland scored the game's opening goal at 13:24, Oneonta scored a pair and then held Cortland scoreless for the remaining time. Freshman Devon Casey and junior Daniel Stern scored for Oneonta in the quarter.
Cortland asserted itself in the second quarter and took a slim 4-3 lead into the break. Matt Rakoczy notched a pair in the period to lead the attack. KJ Theofield scored his second goal of the season to account for Oneonta's only score.
Casey scored his second goal of the game to tie the score at 4-4. Cortland then ran off four staright goals to take control at 8-4. The quarter would end with Cortland holding a 9-6 advantage thanks to a pair of goals by Cody Consul.
Cortland would score the final four goals of the game in the final quarter for the final margin of victory. Consul led Cortland with four goals and a pair of assists.
Oneonta senior Chris Miles had a season high 20 saves in goal today, as he faced 42 shots from the opposition.
Oneonta will be back in action again this coming Wednesday when they host Plattsburgh for a SUNYAC contest beginning at 4pm.
