Softball's rally falls short in game 2, 5-4

Red Dragons drop a pair to Geneseo

Oneonta, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped a pair of games today to SUNY Geneseo which included a seventh inning rally in game 2, falling short 5-4. Game 1 wen the way of the Knights 14-2.
 
Geneseo (12-12/5-3) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning in game 2. Four hits and three errors by the Red Dragons, allowed the runs to score. Ashley Fillmore started the inning off with a triple and scored on a Sam Trapasso single through the right side. A ground out scored the second run and two consecutive throwing errors gave the Knights their three run advantage.
 
Oneonta (7-17/3-7) would not go quietly as they answered with one run in the bottom of the inning. Junior Tricia Kendziera singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gemma Mahoney. Senior Kalyn Deso hit her team leading seventh double of the season to score Kendziera to close the gap to 4-1.
 
The Knights tacked on a fifth run in the fourth inning.
 
Deso started the seventh inning rally off with a walk. Nicole Marzillo belted her third home run of the season over the left field fence to pull the Red Dragons to within 2. Brianna Rivera beat out a single to the second baseman and Jamie Whittam doubled down the left field line to put runners in scoring position. After Geneseo changed pitchers, Laura Campbell laid down a perfectly placed bunt single to plate the fourth run. The Knights were able to get the next two batters to strike out and pop out to preserve the victory.
 
In game 1, Oneonta took a 2-1 advantage after two innings of play. The lead didn't last long as Geneseo scored a single run in the top of the third to tie the game at 2. The Knights broke the game open in the fourth scoring 2 and plated 5 runners in both the fifth and sixth innings to take the victory 14-2.
 
Kendziera started the Red Dragons off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a bunt single by Chandler Campbell. Rivera followed with a single to center field scoring Kendziera.
 
Hunter Bassett got the Red Dragons going in the second inning with a single through the left side. She was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice on Nicole Brieva's hit. Brieva came home after a fielding error on a Kendziera single.
 
Kendziera was 4-for-6 on the afternoon and Rivera was 4-for-7. Marzillo added two runs batted in in the second game.
 
Oneonta will be in action again tomorrow, Sunday, when the play host to Brockport for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
