Oneonta, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta softball team rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win 5-4 and upend the Golden Eagles in game 2 of today's doubleheader. The win improves the Red Dragons to 8-18 overall and 4-8 in the SUNYAC.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Red Dragons took the lead 2-1 after the second inning. Freshman Traci Lichtenstein doubled to right center to get the Oneonta started. With two outs, Laura Campbell doubled to left center to drive in Lichtenstein from second base. Kristyn Neroda reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher allowing Campbell to score.
Brockport (14-9/8-2) tied the game in the third and eventually took the lead 4-2 after the top of the fifth.
Oneonta would not go away as they added a single run in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of Brockport's third error in the game. Gemma Mahoney came into pinch run for Lichtenstein after she singled. Mahoney would score on the fielding error by the second baseman to cut the lead to 4-3.
The bottom of the sixth began on a Tricia Kendziera line shot back up the middle. Freshman
Jamie Whittam stepped to the plate and belted a double to right center with Deso following with a deep single to score Kendziera. Whittam crossed the plate to give the Red Dragons the lead on a Nicole Marzillo ground out back to the pitcher as Deso got herself into a run down between first and second.
The 5-4 lead was all starting pitcher Rachel Hitt needed as she threw the first batter out on a hit back to her. After a single up the middle, Hitt was able to get the next two batters to line out and pop out to end the game. She allowed 7 hits and struck out four batters to earn her fourth win of the season in going the distance.
Deso, Lichtenstein and Campbell each had a pair of hits in the game.
In game 1, Brockport got off to an early start scoring three runs in the first. After two walks, Sarah Rosenbarker laced a single to right field, bring home Jenna Yates. Emily Kolenda followed with a single back up the middle to plate the second run and Erika Lazzaro sacrificed to the second baseman to bring home the third run.
The Golden Eagles would go up 6-2 after the third inning, scoring three more.
Oneonta cut the lead to 6-4, scoring 2 in both the third and fourth innings. Kendziera and Whittam each scored on a Marzillo double to deep right center in the third inning. In the fourth, Hunter Bassett scored on a single by Katie O'Flynn. O'Flynn later scored when the left fielder was unable to cleanly handle a hard grounder hit in her direction.
It was as close as Oneonta would get as the Golden Eagles shut them out, scoring 1 in the fifth and 3 in the seventh to take the 10-4 victory.
Brockport out hit the Red Dragons in game 1, 13-6. The two teams switched places in game 2 as Oneonta had 11-7 advantage in hits.
Oneonta will be action again when they travel to Ithaca College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16
th starting at 3:00 p.m.
