Two big innings for the visiting Fredonia Blue Devils proved to be too much to overcome today, as the SUNY Oneonta baseball team fell 11-6 in the final game of its SUNYAC three-game series. Four runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth gave Fredonia (14-5/5-2 SUNYAC) a 9-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
An RBI single by Brian Sheehan, an RBI double by Dillon Lowe and a two-run single by Kenny Johnston accounted for the four runs in the third inning for the Blue Devils. All the runs for Fredonia came after there were two outs.
Oneonta (9-15/4-3 SUNYAC) came storming back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of its own to get back into the game. A one-out single up the middle by senior
Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland) with the bases loaded scored
Mike Schoonmaker (Marlboro/Marlboro) and
Thomas Hand (Wallkill/Valley Central). Schoonmaker and Hand both singled with one out.
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville), who hit a two-out single through the left side that scored senior
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) from third base, drove in the final run of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Fredonia took advantage of four Oneonta errors to push its lead to 9-3. Dan Fetes doubled in one run and Sheehan singled in another run in the inning.
Oneonta scored a pair of runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth, but that would be it for the remainder of the game for them. Plata drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field in the inning. The run for Oneonta in the fifth came from Massaroni, who hit his second home run of the season.
The Blue Devils added single runs in the seventh and ninth innings for the final margin of victory. Zachary Jordon pitched five innings of three hit ball allowing only one run to earn his third win of the season. Jordon recorded seven strikeouts, as he improved to 4-0 on the season.
Sophomore
Jarred Bronley (Katonah/Somers) couldn't get out of the third inning, as he took the loss to fall to 0-1 this spring. Freshman
Sean McMurray (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) had a solid three innings in relief for Oneonta allowing three hits and one run while recording a pair of strikeouts.
Oneonta is scheduled to play at Oswego on Friday, weather permitting, for a single nine inning game beginning at 3pm.
