Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Perry Laskaris, RPI Sports Information

Men's lacrosse suffers setback at Rensselaer

TROY, N.Y. – Senior captain David Hey scored a game-high three goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a, 10-7, come-from-behind victory over SUNY Oneonta this afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Red Dragons drop to 1-3.

Oneonta built itself a 6-3 lead going into halftime that included a four-goal outburst in the second quarter.  With the score 3-2 in favor of the Red Dragons, Oneonta ripped off three unanswered to pad its lead.  Senior Alex Haffner scored a pair of unassisted goals in the quarter to lead Oneonta.

Trailing 6-2 late in the first half, Rensselaer began its comeback, as Hey scored the game's only man-up goal with 1:37 left in the stanza. Classmate Brett Overend picked the assist on the goal, which brought the hosts to within 6-3 at the half.

The Engineers continued their run in the third quarter, scoring twice to draw within 6-5. Hey then raced in from the left side of the field and tied the game on an unassisted marker – his third of the contest and sixth of the year.

Senior Eric Valero gave RPI its first lead of the game (7-6) with 9:41 remaining in the fourth quarter. Freshman Patrick Finn earned his third assist of the game on Valero's go-ahead goal.

Rensselaer freshman Pat Hogan made it an 8-6 game with 6:11 left, scoring his first collegiate goal after flying in from the left flank. Sophomore Colin Fortuner then capped the 7-0 RPI run with his fifth of the season to make it 9-6.

Oneonta State drew to within 9-7 with 2:32 on the clock after a nice feed from junior captain Daniel Stern found Nicholas Sorrillo at the side of the RPI cage for his second of the season.

Freshman Billy Gibbs stuck home his second of the year, off a dish from Valero, to seal the Engineers' 10-7 victory.

RPI saw four players finish with three points, including Valero (2 goals, 1 assist), Overend (1 goal, 2 assists) and Finn (3 assists). Senior goaltender James Manchester made 12 saves to improve to 2-2.

The Red Dragons had three multi-point producers, including Haffner and freshman Devon Casey, who had two goals apiece. Sorrillo had a goal and an assist. Senior netminder Chris Miles stopped six shots.

Oneonta will open its home schedule this coming Tuesday when it faces city rival Hartwick at 4pm.
