A man-up goal by Hartwick senior Harry Hughes gave the Hawks an insurance goal in a 12-10 victory against city rival SUNY Oneonta today at All College Field. The win for Hartwick raised its early season record to 3-1 overall while the Red Dragons fall to 1-4.
Freshman Josh Heller scored with 1:37 left in the game, which brought Oneonta to within one goal at 11-10. An unnecessary roughness penalty against Oneonta gave Hartwick the man-up opportunity that Hughes was able to capitalize on.
The largest lead by either team today was at the beginning of the contest when Oneonta scored three straight goals to go up early. Freshman Connor Coyle netted a pair for the Red Dragons, as they forced the Hawks to call an early timeout.
After the timeout, the Hawks settled in and took control of the remaining first quarter, as they ran off five unanswered to take a 5-3 lead after the first stanza. Hughes scored three of the goals while assisting on a fourth goal.
Oneonta battled back in a tight second quarter to get the score back to even at 6-6 entering halftime. Coyle scored his third goal of the game in a man-up situation while sophomore Anthony Laureano added another man-up goal at the 5:09 mark of the quarter to cap the scoring for the Red Dragons.
In the third quarter, Giuseppe Rice and Bobby Cassidy each scored a pair of unassisted goals to lead Hartwick to a 10-8 lead coming out of the quarter. Senior Jimmy van de Veerdonk scored and Laureano added another to keep Oneonta within striking distance.
Senior Carl Lengel made 16 saves in goal for Hartwick while his counterpart, senior Chris Miles registered 19 saves.
Oneonta will not be in action again until next Wednesday when they will be at Ithaca for a non-conference game beginning at 4pm.
