Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Jeffrey Weinstein, Union Sports Information

Men's lacrosse falls on the road to Union 15-7

SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore attack Richard Gregory and freshman attack Nolan Stauffer each had two goals and an assist, and sophomore goalie Stefan Basile made 10 saves to help Union men's lacrosse (1-1) earn a 15-7 win over SUNY Oneonta (1-2) at Frank Bailey Field.

Senior midfielders Alex Stone and Joe Cordrey added two goals each for the Dutchmen, who notched their first win of the season.

Daniel Stern had three goals and Jim van de Veerdonk had two goals and an assist to lead SUNY Oneonta and Chris Miles made 14 saves in net for the Red Dragons.

Union, which led 9-3 at halftime, saw its lead cut to three after a spirited Oneonta run in the third quarter. After a defensive opening to the quarter that saw SUNY Oneonta's Connor Coyle (12:11) and Union's Stauffer (9:35) trade goals, the Red Dragons went on a three-goal run to give the visiting team a chance heading into the fourth.

Stern scored his third goal of the contest on a shot from five yards out at the 7:06 mark to start the run.  Van de Veerdonk scored on a turnaround shot at 5:07, then set up Oneonta's next goal just six seconds later off a faceoff win, feeding Devon Casey for a quick score at 5:01 to make it 10-7.

Union would score all five goals in the fourth quarter, including three in a :33 span in the opening minutes to put the game away. Cordrey got the run started, scoring while being leveled to the ground at 12:43. Junior midfielder Greg Mooney received a long pass from Nolan Stauffer and scored from out in front of the cage at 12:20. Then Stone won the ensuing faceoff and charged up the field for a goal from 15 yards out at 12:10.

Junior attack Nate Greenberg and freshman attack Cameron Slatton added goals later in the quarter to seal the win.

The Dutchmen got off to a hot start scoring five unanswered goals in the first quarter to take a commanding lead in the contest. Junior midfielder Jonathan Andrews (14:21), Gregory (13:22), and Stone (13:04), all scored in the first two minutes of the contest, while Cordrey's goal from the side of the cage at 9:37, and Stauffer's first career goal after a spin move at 3:48 gave Union a 5-0 lead.

Van de Veerdonk and Stern scored early in the second quarter to cut into the Union lead, but that would be as close as SUNY Oneonta would get before the halftime break, as Union scored four of the next five goals to take a six goal lead into halftime.

Oneonta will be on the road again on Friday when they travel to Rensselaer for a game that begins at 4pm.
