Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball drops season opening doubleheaders

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team dropped a pair of doubleheaders this past weekend to open the 2013 season.  The Red Dragons dropped two games at Rowan on Saturday and then fell to Johns Hopkins in its two games yesterday.

In the season opening twin bill at Rowan, Oneonta fell 7-1 and 6-0.  In game one, The Red Dragons trailed 3-1 before Rowan put four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Junior Stephen Provenzano (Islip/Islip) was 1-3 in the game while driving in the lone run for the Red Dragons in the top of the fifth inning.  Sophomore Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three hits, three runs – one earned – while striking out five batters.

In the second game against Rowan, Oneonta managed only five hits including a pair by senior Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia).  Sophomore Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) threw seven strong innings in his first outing of the year allowing only five hits and two runs – one earned – while recording three strikeouts.

In the opening game against Johns Hopkins, the hosts walked off in the bottom of the ninth on a single down the line to drive in the winning run in a 9-8 victory.

Junior Chris Orlando led the offense with three doubles in four plate appearances.  He also scored three runs and drove in one run.  Senior Thomas Hand (Wallkill/Valley Central) had a pair of hits including a double and an RBI.  Sophomore Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) also collected two hits while driving in a run.

Junior Mike McFerran (Albany/Catholic Central) threw three innings and allowed only one run while striking out three batters.

The second game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning because of darkness.  The final score was 4-0 in favor of the Blue Jays.  The lone bright spot was the pitching of freshman Benji Parkes (Lansing/Lansing), who threw five innings allowing two hits and two runs while striking out four batters.

Oneonta will be back in action again this Saturday when they are scheduled to play a doubleheader versus St. Mary's College of Maryland beginning at 11am.
