The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team battled for the final time in 2012-13 tonight at New Paltz, coming home with a 90-72 loss to the Hawks. Three players registered double figures for Oneonta (4-21/3-15 SUNYAC) led by sophomore
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South), who scored 18 points.
Twelve of Mager's points tonight came from the free throw line, as he established a single season mark for free throws made with 171, breaking the old mark of 160 set by Troy Talbot during the 2010-11 season. He also shot 85.5 percent (171-200) from the charity stripe, which is the third highest percent in a single season. His 200 attempts are second only to Talbot, who recorded 216 two seasons ago.
Oneonta scored 12 points off turnovers in the first half to keep the game close at 36-33 going into halftime. The Red Dragons led early, but fell behind by as many as eight points before coming all the way back to tie the score at 30 apiece.
New Paltz (11-14/9-9 SUNYAC) exploded in the second half for 54 points that saw them shoot 62 percent (18-29) from the floor. They had four players in double figures including two that scored 20+ in the contest. The win for the Hawks earned them the sixth and final spot in the SUNYAC tournament, which begins on Tuesday night with first round games.
