The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team picked up a key SUNYAC win at home tonight against Plattsburgh 56-52. The win moved the Red Dragons to 6-6in the conference as they try to secure one of the six playoff spots with six games remaining. Oneonta has now won five of its last six conference games while moving to within one game of the .500 mark overall.
The Red Dragons had three players reach double figures tonight led by the junior duo of
Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) and
Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland), who each scored 14 points. Sophomore
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) added 13 points and six blocks. Oneonta converted 26 Plattsburgh turnovers into 17 points while scoring 30 of its 56 points in the paint.
There were four ties and eight lead changes in the second half as the two teams battled closely. The final lead change came when freshman
Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) made a pair of free throws to put Oneonta ahead 45-44 with 4:26 left in the contest. Loomis would add another layup after a Schilling steal and a pair of free throws by Schilling increased Oneonta's lead to 49-44 with 2:51 remaining.
The two teams exchanged baskets before Kathleen Payne buried a three to bring the Cardinals to within two points at 51-49 with 1:35 to go. Payne scored all of her team high 17 points in the second half.
Another layup by Schilling and a pair of free throws by Pappalardo gave Oneonta a 55-49 advantage with 43 seconds left.
Oneonta trailed for much of the first half before a three-point basket by freshman
Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) gave the Red Dragons a 15-14 lead that they built into a 25-18 lead at halftime.
Oneonta will host SUNY Potsdam tomorrow afternoon at 2pm.
