Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) scored a game high 21 points today to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a 67-54 road win at Fredonia. The Red Dragons are now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC after splitting its opening two games for 2013-14 conference schedule. Last night, Oneonta was defeated by Buffalo State 89-68.
Today's game found Oneonta with a decided advantage in three categories; points off turnovers, 24-13; bench points, 28-18; and points in the paint, 38-24. The Red Dragons also shot 49 percent from the floor while hitting 11-of-12 free throws.
Oneonta found itself behind 13-4 in the first nine minutes of the game. A 15-3 run by Oneonta over the next five minutes gave them an 18-16 lead. Senior Dan lee buried a three-pointer to give the Red Dragons the lead.
After falling behind again 22-20, sophomore
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) tied the score with a layup and then made the free throw to complete the three-point play and give Oneonta the lead for good. The Red Dragons carried a 25-22 lead into halftime after Mager made a layup with 1:36 remaining in the opening half.
Oneonta seized full control of the contest in the first 10 minutes of the second half with a 26-10 surge that put them ahead 51-32. Sophomore
Kareem Williams (Bronx/IN-Tech Academy) made a layup that gave Oneonta its 19-point advantage with 10:48 left to go.
In the game, Mager collected a team high seven rebounds to go with four steals. Freshman
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) had 16 points and four steals. Zuvic finished the game with 11 points and six boards.
In last night's game versus Buffalo State, the Bengals jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the opening three minutes en route to its victory. Zuvic scored a season high 23 points to lead three players in double figures. Mager scored 14 points while McElroy added 12 points.
Oneonta will host St. John Fisher next Saturday afternoon beginning at 2pm.
