The Hartwick men's basketball team outscored visiting SUNY Oneonta 15-7 in overtime to come away with an 86-78 victory in front of a packed Lambros Arena crowd on Tuesday night. The win for the Hawks, which snaps a two-game winless streak, evens their record at 4-4 while the Red Dragons fall to 1-3.
Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) scored 21 points to lead the Hawks and had five of those points in the extra period to key the Hartwick victory. He also added nine rebounds and two steals. Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) added 17 points, nine boards and two steals. Mike Geisser (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) scored 11 points and came away with three steals. Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) had 10 points, three assists, and two steals.
Oneonta was led by junior
Zach Mager's (New City/Clarkstown South) 29 points. Senior
Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) contributed 13 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. Freshman
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) tacked on 10 points and three assists.
The Hawks got off to a fast start in the early stages of the first quarter as they took a 6-0 lead at 18:31. An 8-3 Red Dragon run, however, gave the visiting team a 10-9 advantage with 16:23 showing on the clock.
The two teams would tussle back and forth as there were three lead changes and three ties in just over four minutes of play. The Hawks would break the final tie at 11:35 on a jumper from Matt Petruccione (Saratoga Springs, NY/Bishop Maginn) that started a 13-5 run and gave 'Wick its biggest lead of the game, 32-24, with just over seven minutes to play in the first half.
The Hartwick lead stood at 34-26 with a little under five minutes remaining in the first stanza before a 14-6 run by Oneonta ended the half and gave the Red Dragons a 40-38 lead at halftime.
The second half saw the Hawks go on a 10-0 run to start the period and lead 48-40 at 16:38. Hartwick led for most of the second half and had two nine-point leads with the last coming with 6:05 left in regulation. Oneonta State would not go away quietly as it went on an11-2 run to move ahead 69-68 with 2:13 left in the second frame.
The Red Dragons held to their one point lead until Suderley's jumper gave the Hawks a one point advantage with 1:15 to play. Oneonta answered with a McElroy basket with 49 seconds left to go up by one. McElroy then fouled Suderley to send him to the charity stripe. Suderley missed the first attempt but sank the second one and the contest was deadlocked in a 71-71 tie with 35 ticks showing on the game clock.
Oneonta took possession and ran the clock down to 10 seconds before calling a timeout. Lee put up a shot that fell short of the basket and Suderley pulled down the rebound but was called for traveling and the Red Dragons were awarded the ball with just over one second left. After the Hawks called a 30 second timeout, McElroy's layup rimmed out and the game went into an extra period.
The overtime period was a back and forth affair that featured three ties and three lead changes. The Red Dragons went ahead 77-75 on a layup by Lee with 2:35 to go in overtime. The Hawks would then embark on their game-changing run that started with a traditional three-point play from Lufkin that gave 'Wick a 78-77 advantage with 2:31 remaining. Bradley then converted his own three-point play to increase the Hawk lead to 81-77 at 1:34. It was all Hawks the rest of the way as they converted five foul shots and held the Red Dragons without a field goal to pull out the victory.
Hartwick had point advantages in the paint (46-24), off of turnovers (19-10) and got a big lift from its bench as it outscored Oneonta State 27-17. The Hawks shot 47% (31-of-66) from the floor and made only 22% (2-of-9) of their three-point attempts. 'Wick shot 88% (22-of-25) from the foul line. In comparison, the Red Dragons converted 43.3 % (26-of-60) of its field goals, made 37% (10-of-27) of its three-point shots, and shot 84.2% (16-of-19) in free throws.
Oneonta will continue on the road this weekend at Buffalo State and Fredonia, as they open its SUNYAC schedule. The Red Dragons face Buffalo State Friday night beginning at 8pm and play Fredonia Saturday afternoon at 4pm.
