Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball falls at Rochester 60-55

SUNY Oneonta got 18 points from sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) and 13 points and a team high eight boards from senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford), but the Red Dragons dropped its first game of the season today at Rochester 60-55.  The Red Dragons shot only 18 percent in the second half, which allowed the Yellowjackets to overcome an eight-point halftime deficit en route to the come-from-behind win.

Rochester's big three of Ally Zywicki, Danielle McNabb, and Loren Wagner combined for 50 points.  Zywicki matched her career high with 25 points, 12 coming in the last seven minutes.  McNabb had 13 points and five rebounds. Wagner posted her third double-double in four games, getting 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also blocked five shots.

A jumper by Price put Oneonta ahead, 47-39, with 9:30 left. The lead was still five, 48-43, when junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) made the second of two free throw attempts. Rochester ran off nine straight points: two free throws by Wagner; back to back layups off steals by Blair Landolfi and Zywicki, and a three-pointer by McNabb from the right of the arc. It was 52-48 Rochester before Oneonta made a final push.

Price sank a three-pointer with 4:04 remaining, which was the last field goal of the game for Oneonta. Then Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) made two free throws and Price made two more to nudge the Red Dragons ahead, 55-54, with 1:12 remaining.

Zywicki answered with a three-pointer at the top of the key on a kick-out from Wagner. After Oneonta missed, Zywicki made three of four from the line in the last 29 seconds to seal the win.

The Red Dragons got balanced scoring in the first half and opened a nine-point lead at the break, 35-26. Crawford scored eight points and Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) had seven plus three assists. Oneonta hit 43% from the floor (16 of 37). Rochester shot 39% from the floor (11-28) but was victimized on the boards (Oneonta held a 23-14 advantage) and committed nine turnovers. Zywicki had eight points at halftime, McNabb and Wagner six each.

A layup by Longto ended a 9-2 spurt midway through the first half and put Oneonta ahead, 19-8. Crawford's trey kept it at nine, 24-15, with less than seven minutes left. Rochester drew within five twice, the last time on a trey by Zywicki. Schilling and Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) made baskets for the nine-point halftime lead for the visitors.

SUNY Oneonta will be back in action Tuesday night, Dec. 3, as they travel across the hill to face city rival Hartwick beginning at 6pm.
