Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer defeats Fredonia 5-2

With one regular season game left to be played on Wednesday at Hartwick, the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team finished off SUNYAC Conference play by claiming the regular season title with a 5-2 win over visiting Fredonia.

Oneonta (9-4-3/6-0-3) netted three goals in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the halftime break. In the 17th minute of play, sophomore Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck) played the ball down the right flank to Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). DeSimone broke around two Blue Devil defenders and drove the ball along the six yard box, past a diving keeper, to Shana Ventresca (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls), who slid in front of her defender to score her first goal of the season.

DeSimone would set up the second goal as she floated a cross to the back post where Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was waiting to head the ball past starting goalkeeper, Hannah McGlinchey.

Fredonia (4-11-2/2-6-1 SUNYAC) had their best opportunity in the first half when an Oneonta defender tripped Kristie Kleine in the box and gave away a penalty kick. Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), the Red Dragon keeper, made an amazing diving save to her right as she kept the score at 2-0. DeSimone would now work her own magic as she won the ball off one of the center defenders and muscled her way through the rest of the defense before firing the ball home just over the keeper's head.

The Blue Devils would get on the board in the second half as they started to press a bit more to find a goal and cut the Oneonta lead to 3-1. In the 60th minute Alexis Moreland found herself with a lot of empty space between her and the goal. An Oneonta defender would force her to chop the ball a couple of times but she would not be stopped as she slotted it past the defender and under a sliding Murphy.

The Red Dragons answered back as they would score two more to take a 5-1 lead. DeSimone took the beautiful through pass from freshman Casey Walsh (Pearl River/Pearl River) and chopped the ball back to her right foot on the left side of the goal before sending a rocket past the keeper and in to the side netting of the goal.

The fifth goal and final Oneonta goal, started with Avery Serfis (West Hurley/Onteora). Serfis won the ball off a defender at the top of the box and passed it Ventresca who was open on the left side. Ventresca flighted the ball into the box and found the head of Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) in the 84th minute.

Fredonia would score a second goal less than a minute later as the ball was served across the box about 12 yards out and flicked on by Moreland to the head of Sarah Lindovski.

Murphy made 8 saves in the game.

Oneonta out shot and cornered the Blue Devils, 15-13 and 6-4 respectively.

The Red Dragon's wore black tops today with pink writing and numbers for Breast Cancer Awareness in honor of those that have fought and continue to fight the battle.

Before the game began, the team also recognized their four seniors. DeSimone, Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) and Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) are all four year players while Ventresca has been with the team the last two years.

Oneonta's final regular season game is at Hartwick on Wednesday, October 30th. Game time is slated for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
