Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer rolls past Buffalo State 2-0

The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team rolled past Buffalo State today at home with a 2-0 convincing win to move their record to 8-4-3 and 5-0-3 in the SUNYAC. The loss for the Bengals drops them to 11-5-1 and 6-2 in the conference.

Oneonta dominated the play from the starting whistle. The Red Dragons had a great opportunity to take a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute as sophomore Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) took a beautiful through pass and found herself one-on-one with the keeper, Linda Banfield. Ceschini took the quick shot but Banfield was able to get a fingertip on it to put it around the far post.

It wouldn't take Ceschini long to find the back of the net as she opened the scoring at the 21:19 mark. Senior Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was fouled from behind, about 25 yards out on the right hand side. DeSimone took the ensuing direct kick and drove the ball through traffic to the back post, where Ceschini one-timed it past Banfield and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Red Dragons started the second half with the same vigor as the first and had another great opportunity to make it a two goal game but Banfield came up with another great save. Junior Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) worked the ball around her defender on the right hand side and sent a looping cross to the back post that found DeSimone's head, but she was unable to generate enough power to put it past the keeper.

Ceschini would play the role of playmaker in the 81st minute for goal number two as she broke down the left hand wing and sent the ball across the middle to classmate Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills), who drove it home left footed for the 2-0 lead.

Oneonta's defense stymied the Bengals as they could only muster three shots on the afternoon.

The Red Dragons held an advantage in shots (12-3) and corners (2-0).

Oneonta's goalkeeper, Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), made three saves on the afternoon while her counterpart Banfield made 4.

The Red Dragons are in action again tomorrow, October 26th, as they host Fredonia for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
