Men's soccer clinches SUNYAC regular season title

Box Score Sophomore Sean Vinberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) and freshman Zachary Southworth (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) each scored their first goals of the season today, as the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team defeated Buffalo State, 2-0, on the road.  The victory for Oneonta (10-3-4/6-0-2 SUNYAC) clinched the SUNYAC regular season title and, with it, home field throughout the conference tournament, which begins next Saturday with first round games.  This is the fourth consecutive year that the Red Dragons have either won outright or shared the regular season title.  Oneonta is the two-time defending SUNYAC champion and is looking to make it three in a row in 2013.

"It was a solid win against a much improved Buffalo State team," texted coach Iain Byrne.  "Earning the home field for the conference tournament will be a big advantage for us."

Oneonta made two first half goals stand up today, as junior Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) recorded his third shutout of the season.  Pellegrino made three stops today in running his season record to 5-2-3 overall.

The Red Dragons didn't waste any time in putting its first goal on the scoreboard this afternoon.  Vinberg scored on a corner kick in the fourth minute.  Vinberg was the second player to get his head on the ball after it came off the head of classmate Jared Van Brunt (Sayville/Sayville).

Southworth's goal came in the 22nd minute off an assist from sophomore Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee).  Southworth completed the play with a shot to the near corner.

Oneonta outshot the Bengals, 15-8, while holding a decided advantage in corner kicks, 10-2.

The Red Dragons will close out the regular season tomorrow at Fredonia beginning at 1pm.
