The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team fell behind 1-0 in the 56th minute today, but came storming back with three unanswered goals to hand visiting Brockport its first loss of the season. The Red Dragons controlled the tempo after falling behind en route to picking up its second SUNYAC victory of the season.
“We have been working on our passing and transitioning with speed,” said head coach
Liz McGrail. “It was great to see us put it together and get a good win. It was a great team effort today.”
Leading the attack for Oneonta (5-3-1/2-1 SUNYAC) was junior
Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) who notched a pair of goals including the insurance goal in the 83rd minute. The goals for Guglielmo give her three for the season.
After the two teams played to a scoreless opening half, it was Brockport (7-1-1/2-1 SUNYAC) that got on the board in the 56th minute off a corner kick. Senior Sarah Lawson sent the kick in from the corner, which stayed loose in the box. After a failed attempt by another Brockport player to get a shot off, junior Katie Gildemeyer got her foot on the ball and sent it to the back of the goal for the lead.
Oneonta wasted no time in tying the score as they came right back less than two minutes later on Guglielmo's first score. She got her foot on a ball in the box and blasted a shot by Brockport keeper Laura Thompson.
The Red Dragons kept up the attack and got the go-ahead goal 15 minutes later. Junior
Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) made a hustling play along the left flank and sent a perfect crossing pass that made it to the front of the goal. Classmate
Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) was in the right place as she used her leg to redirect the pass into the right corner of the goal to give Oneonta a 2-1 advantage.
Guglielmo's insurance goal came when she beat a defender and got a shot off from in close that beat Thompson to her right as the ball got inside the left post.
Oneonta will be in action again tomorrow afternoon when they host SUNY Geneseo beginning at 1pm.
