Men's soccer opens SUNYAC schedule with home win

Box Score Defending SUNYAC champions, SUNY Oneonta, opened its 2012 men's soccer conference schedule at home today with a 2-1 victory against visiting Oswego.  Junior Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy) tallied both goals for the Red Dragons as they won their fourth straight game.

Oneonta (4-2-1/1-0 SUNYAC) held a decided advantage in shots 18-8 including 11 in the second half.  The Red Dragons also finished the game with a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Oneonta's goals in the match came six minutes apart.  They were scored in the final two minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half.  Halberg's first goal came when freshman Brian Bartichek (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) sent a through ball into the middle of the box, which Halberg converted.  The second goal came on a cross into the box from senior Dan Scott (Hyde Park/FD Roosevelt).

Oswego's lone goal came in the 67th minute on a direct kick just outside the box after a foul.  Sophomore Ryan Purdy drilled it home to cut Oneonta's lead in half with plenty of time left.

Freshman goalkeeper Colin Balkwell made four saves for Oneonta today in picking up his third win of the season.  Senior keeper PJ Goodwin made five stops for the Lakers in the loss.

Oneonta hosts its rival tomorrow for a 1pm match.  SUNY Cortland defeated New Paltz today 1-0.
