The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team scored early in the second half and made it stand up as they defeated the visiting Thoroughbreds of Skidmore 1-0 today in non-conference action. The win for the Red Dragons pushed its season record to 3-2-1 overall while the Thoroughbreds fall to 1-4 overall.
Oneonta controlled the tempo of the contest from the outset and especially in the second half. After going into the break tied at zero, the Red Dragons asserted itself early in the second half, which resulted in the game's only goal.
Junior
Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) was battling for a loose ball in the box that rebounded off a Skidmore defender. Greco took one last attempt at the ball and sent a shot along the ground that appeared to be saved by the outstretched keeper from Skidmore. Somehow the ball squirted through Gab Lawrence's hands and the ball continued on to the back of the goal.
Greco's goal came just one minute after freshman
Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial) sent a shot towards the goal that Lawrence came up with while being sprawled out on the ground.
Oneonta finished the game with a 13-4 advantage in shots including a 10-2 advantage in the second half.
Skidmore's most dangerous scoring chance came in the final thirty seconds on a partial breakaway by Arena Manning. After the defender caught up to her she got a shot off from the top of the box that was stopped by freshman
Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), who was in goal for the first time as a collegian.
Murphy saved all four shots today and picked up her first collegiate win and shutout for Oneonta.
Oneonta will be in action again next Friday afternoon when they open SUNYAC play at Oswego. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm.
