Oswego, NY - The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team went on the road to open the SUNYAC season with a victory over Oswego 1-0. The goal was scored in the 86th minute of the game and the Red Dragons were able to withstand one last Laker attack to secure the victory.
Junior
Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers), scored her first of the season off a flank service by senior
Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches). Brantmeyer broke down the right flank with a nifty touch by the defender and passed the ball to Guglielmo, who took one touch on the six yard box before firing home the game-winning goal to the back post.
Oneonta (4-2-1/1-0 SUNYAC) and Oswego (3-3/0-1 SUNYAC) were tied at the half as both teams played stingy defense and didn't allow many opportunities for score. The game was delayed for forty-five minutes before the second half started due to inclement weather.
When the game resumed, the rain began and the game started to open up for both teams as both teams had good chances to take the lead. The Laker's best opportunity came with 13 minutes left in the game off the foot of Bri Dolan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius). A Laker corner kick was pushed aside by Red Dragon keeper
Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central) and fumbled at the right side of the goal. The ball was later controlled by Dolan who was able to fire a shot, but Murphy was up for the challenge, making the key save.
The Red Dragons countered with an attack of their own. Junior
Alaina Greco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) was able to control a ball after a deflection fell to her feet about 45 yards out and take on the defense before having it touched aside by a defender. Classmate
Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) picked the up the loose ball and fired a left footed shot from 30 yards that was turned aside by Laker keeper Emily Varonier (Miller Place/Miller Place).
The game-winning goal was scored less than four minutes later.
Murphy made three saves on the game to pick up her second consecutive shutout, while Varonier stopped five shots.
Oneonta led in shots and corners with 8-4 and 4-2, respectively.
The Red Dragons are in action tomorrow, September 22nd as they travel to face the Red Dragons of Cortland for a 1:00 p.m. start.
