The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team is off to a 7-2 start thanks to a 3-0 sweep of Scranton on the road tonight. The Red Dragons are coming off a 3-1 weekend and, with tonight's win, handed the Royals (9-1) its first loss of the season.
“We are so balanced this year across the front,” said coach Cashman. “Our setters did a great job of distributing the ball and we showed some mental toughness in all three sets.”
Oneonta trailed in every set before coming back to win each set 25-23. In the first set, the Red Dragons trailed 15-11 before Cashman called a timeout to settle the team. Oneonta came back and tied the score at 17 apiece en route to taking the first set.
In the second set, Oneonta trailed again, this time 10-5 before Cashman called a timeout. The Red Dragons came all the way back and tied the score at 23 apiece before closing out the second set.
In the third set, Oneonta trailed 11-7, when once again, Cashman called a timeout to make some adjustments. Oneonta closed out the match with its final 25-23 set of the evening.
Senior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) led the attack tonight with 13 kills. She also added three aces and eight digs.
Classmate
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) and freshman
Becca Horton (Owego/Owego Free Academy) fueled the attack with 15 and 14 assists respectively. Calvello also recorded nine digs and a pair of blocks. Horton added 11 digs.
Junior
Kristina Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) led the defensive effort with 17 digs while classmate
Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union-Endicott) had four blocks to lead the way at the net.
Oneonta will be at the Union College Invitational this weekend. They will play four matches beginning Friday afternoon versus Sage College at 4pm.
