The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team outlasted Lewis & Clark in five sets only to fall to St. Scholastics 3-0 in the championship match of the 43rd annual Oneonta Invitational today. The Red Dragons finished its opening weekend with a record of 3-1.
In its five-set match with Lewis & Clark, Oneonta found itself down one set to none and down 18-11 in the second set before rallying to win the set 27-25. The Red Dragons then cruised through the third set 25-9 before dropping the fourth set 25-22. In the fifth set, Oneonta prevailed 15-13 to advance into the championship.
Four players registered double figures in kills led by senior
Kacy Boburka (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) and junior
Erica Darpino (Endicott/Union-Endicott), who each had 12 to lead the team. Senior
Brittany Calvello (Gloversville/Broadalbin-Perth) was next with 11 kills and freshman
Hannah O'Neil (Brookhaven/Bellport) had 10 kills. Calvello also registered a team high 24 assists while both her and Darpino had four block assists.
Darpino came back with seven kills and Boburka and O'Neil each had six kills, but it wasn't enough to overcome a solid St. Scholastica squad in the championship. Junior
Kristina Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) led the defensive effort with 11 digs while Boburka added nine digs.
Oneonta will be back in action again next weekend when they travel to Rochester to participate in the University of Rochester Invitational. The Red Dragons face the hosts on Friday beginning at 6pm followed by a match with Hamilton at 8pm.
