Oneonta Softball drops a pair to rival Cortland

Season finale tomorrow versus Oswego

The SUNY Oneonta Softball team fell to 11-23 and 4-12 in the SUNYAC after a pair of losses to visiting Cortland today at Oneonta's Red Dragons Softball Field. The pitching performances by Cortland's dominant pair Lyndsay Rowell and Abby Martin proved to be the difference. The rival Red Dragons also pounded out 19 hits in the two games while scoring 16 runs in the sweep.

Cortland (34-6/17-1 SUNYAC) is currently ranked #11 in the national polls and proved why they deserve that ranking in the games today. In the first game, they defeated Oneonta 4-1. Cortland got started in the top of the second inning. Jess Harman led the inning off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Kayla Lynch. Harman later scored when Nicole Gallo doubled down the left field line.

Oneonta answered back in their bottom half to tie the game at 1's. Katie O'Flynn got on board thanks to a fielding error by Cortland's shortstop. Sophomore Laura Loudis singled down the left field line, advancing O'Flynn to second. Shannon McQueeney hit into a fielders choice, moving O'Flynn to third and Loudis was put out at second base. Chandler Campbell then stepped up and singled in the team's only run of the game.

The rival Red Dragons responded with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to secure the victory. Rowell pitched 6 innings allowing two hits and striking out four batters for her 14th win of the season. Morgan Kuhn earned her 7th save in relief.

In the second game of the day, Cortland scored early and often, plating two, six then four in the second through fourth innings respectively and defeating Oneonta 12-1 in five innings.

Cortland had two home runs in game two with the first coming in the second inning by Lynch and a bomb in the third that plated three runs by Meaghan Kohler in the fourth.  The visiting Red Dragons got a pair of hits from Lorraine Stoddard, Kohler, Harman and Lynch in the second game. Kohler and Lynch also each finished with four run batted in.

Oneonta's single run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nicole Marzillo singled to center field. Samantha Rios came into pinch run for Marzillo and was moved to second on a Loudis single down the left field line. The two base runners advanced on a passed ball and Briana Rivera drove Rios in with single back up the middle.

Oneonta will close out its season at home tomorrow when they host Oswego in a doubleheader, that was postponed from Friday. The first game is set to start at 12 p.m.
