A come-from-behind win in game 1 and a strong pitching performance in game 2 gave Oneonta State a sweep of Brockport today. The two wins clinched not only a spot in the SUNYAC tournament, but the #3 seed. Oneonta (16-19/9-9 SUNYAC) finished tied for third place in the standings with Plattsburgh, but earns the third seed for the tournament because they won two of the three games with the Cardinals during the regular season.
In today's opening game, the Red Dragons trailed 5-1 entering the fifth inning before they began its rally. Oneonta scored a single run in the fifth on an RBI ground out by first baseman
Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island).
In the sixth, Brockport pitchers walked the bases loaded with one out. The first run of the inning came in on a wild pitch. Senior
Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens) drove in the second run when he grounded out to second base. The final run came in when senior
Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) hit a double to right field.
The two teams went to the eighth inning tied 5-5 before Oneonta scored a pair to take a 7-5 lead. The big hit came off the bat of Wells, who hit a one-out single to left center field that drove in
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) and
Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland).
Junior
Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up his third win of the season. He faced one batter over the minimum allowing only one hit while recording one strikeout.
Wells and Bouyea both had two hits in the game for Oneonta.
In the second game, freshman
Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) held the Golden Eagles scoreless for six innings before being relieved in the eighth with a 3-2 lead. In his stint he allowed four hits and two earned runs while recording two strikeouts.
Freshman
Kyle Jordan (Levittown/Division) and Hegmann pitched the final two innings and kept Brockport off the scoreboard.
The big inning for Oneonta came in the top of the ninth when they exploded for six runs to blow open the game. The Red Dragons made the Golden Eagles pay for four errors in the inning en route to scoring the six runs.
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville), who had a pair of hits in the game, drove in a pair of runs in the inning.
Sophomore
Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) led Oneonta's offense with a 4-for-4 performance and a run batted in.
Oneonta will closeout the regular season at home this Wednesday when they host Union College for a single game beginning at 4pm.
