Baseball defeats Union in SUNYAC tournament tune-up

Red Dragons face Brockport Friday at 3:30pm

The Oneonta State baseball team entertained Union College today in its final regular season game of the 2012 season.  The Red Dragons collected 12 hits en route to an 8-5 win in its final game prior to beginning play in the SUNYAC tournament this weekend at SUNY Cortland.

After 3-1/2 scoreless innings, Oneonta (17-19) broke the game open with five runs in the home half of the fourth inning.  A pair of walks to Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens) and Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) started the inning for the Red Dragons.  Catcher Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) who executed a sacrifice bunt perfectly moved both players into scoring position.

After Union recorded the second out, senior Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack) hit a ball deep into the hole, which he beat out for a single, which scored Wells.  Another walk loaded the bases for senior Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland), who singled down the left field line to drive in Bouyea and Hitt.  Freshman Charlie MacDowell (Middletown/Minisink Valley) then hit a double to deep left field that drove in Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) and Plata.

Oneonta added a single run in the fifth inning before scoring a pair of runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead.

Union (15-17) rallied in the ninth inning before junior Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush) recorded the final out of the game with runners at first and second.  Malcolm Kelly hit a one-out double to left center to get things started for the Dutchmen.  Nick Ranalli then walked and was followed with a single by Dylan Katz-Wicks that loaded the bases for leading hitter Tyler Heck.  Heck drilled a double a to the gap in left center that scored a pair.

An infield single by David Peretti scored Katz-Wicks from third and gave Union runners at the corners.  Oneonta made the move to Hegmann, who struck out Dom Calistro on three pitches to end the game.

Oneonta used six pitchers in the game with the win going to freshman Jarred Bronley (Katonah/Somers), who pitched a scoreless third and fourth inning while striking out one batter.

Sophomore Andrew Beaule took the loss for Union today.  Beaule was touched up for five earned runs in his four innings as the starter for the Dutchmen.

Next up is Brockport on Friday in the SUNYAC tournament.  The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30pm.  Oneonta is seeded No. 3 in this year's double elimination tournament.
