Oneonta, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta softball team split a doubleheader at home today with Kings College, taking game two of the series 6-2. The Red Dragons got a solid pitching performance out of freshman Rachel Hitt, who threw a complete game four-hitter to earn her fourth win of the season.
Kings (26-10) took the lead at the end of the first inning, 1-0, after Hitt walked the leadoff batter, Jenn Harnischfeger. Erin Beane sacrificed the runner to second who later scored on two consecutive illegal pitch calls.
Oneonta (11-21) answered back in the third inning when the Lady Monarchs pitcher bobbled two grounders hit back up the middle, loading the bases with freshmen Shannon McQueeney, Laura Campbell and a single by Brianna Rivera. Classmate Gemma Mahoney laced a single down the left field line, scoring McQueeney. Senior Kalyn Deso stepped up to the plate and hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, plating Rivera. Campbell scored on a passed ball for the third run of the inning.
The Red Dragons added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to secure the victory. In the fifth inning, Campbell singled and moved to second on a Mahoney sacrifice bunt. Deso drove Campbell in with a single up the middle.
The sixth inning started with sophomore Chandler Campbell reaching base on a bunt single. With two outs, McQueeney walked and Rivera singled to right center, plating Campbell. The second run of the inning came on the Monarch pitchers second passed ball of the game.
Oneonta closed out the game on a terrific double play. After Beane walked, she advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Brittny Baynes stepped to the plate and popped to shallow left field. Rivera came charging and made a diving catch for the second out and doubled Beane off of second base to end the game.
Rivera finished game two with two hits. Deso drove in two runs.
In game 1, Oneonta jumped out to a 1-0 lead after three innings. L. Campbell tripled down the right field line and scored on a throwing error by the second baseman.
The Lady Monarchs came back with three runs in the top of the fourth. Amanda Cardone started the inning with a single to right field. Baynes followed suit with a single to the second baseman. The runners each advanced on a throwing error. Kayla Rutkoski reached on a fielding error by Nicole Brieva, plating the teams first run. Rachel Taylor then singled to deep right field bringing in Kings other two runs.
Kings continued the assault as they scored a single run in the fifth and sixth innings. Monarch's pitcher Brittany Haight earned her seventh win of the season, allowing four hits and striking out six batters.
Oneonta will next be in action as they host Oswego, this Friday, April 27
th in a doubleheader set to start at 3 p.m.
