The Oneonta State baseball team was defeated twice today by visiting SUNY Cortland in a SUNYAC doubleheader. Oneonta managed only a single hit in dropping game 1, 7-1 while the rival Red Dragons pounded out 21 hits in taking game 2, 16-2.
SUNY Cortland (27-7-1/13-2 SUNYAC) scored all the runs they would need for starter, Ray Angelucci, in the top of the third inning en route to the victory. Angelucci struck out eight in tossing a complete game, one-hitter.
In the third, Cortland scored three runs with two outs. Brian Barry beat out a ball hit deep to second base that drove in two runs. John Adornetto and Andrew Pezzuto scored on the play.
Cortland added a single run in the fourth inning and three more in the seventh. For the second time in the contest, Cortland was able to score three runs with two outs. Cortland took advantage of two errors in the inning that led to a pair of unearned runs. Pinch-hitter Max Rosing had a single in the inning that drove in the final run for Cortland.
Oneonta's (14-17/7-8 SUNYAC) lone run came in the fifth inning.
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) led off the inning with a double before moving to third on a balk. He scored when Angelucci threw a wild pitch.
P.J. Rinaldi led Cortland with three hits in game 1 while Barry drove in three runs.
Freshman
Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) took the loss after lasting only three innings for Oneonta. He allowed eight hits and was charged with four runs, all earned. He recorded three strikeouts while walking two batters.
In game 2, Cortland scored a single run in the top of the second inning before Oneonta bounced back with a pair to take a 2-1 lead. Senior
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) led off with a single and went to second when Massaroni was hit by a pitch.
Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) moved the two into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Knack scored on a ground out to shortstop and Massaroni scored on a wild pitch.
Cortland left no doubt about this game as they scored four runs in three of the next four innings to take command. Barry had another solid game with four hits including a triple and four runs batted in. Kyle Barkley had three hits including a home run and three runs batted in. Adornetto was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. Chris Jackson and Matt June each had three hits.
Knack, Massaroni and
Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens) collected two hits each in the loss.
Mike Hughes threw six innings and struck out six hitters en route to picking up his sixth win of the season.
Senior
Will Rivas (Babylon/Babylon) took the loss for Oneonta allowing nine hits and five earned runs in 2-2/3 innings.
Oneonta will be home again this Wednesday when they host nationally ranked Ithaca beginning at 4pm.
