The Oneonta State baseball team fell at home today to nationally ranked SUNY Cortland 4-1 in the first of a three-game series in the SUNYAC. The two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader tomorrow, which was scheduled for a noon start, but inclement weather coming into the area has moved the start time up to 10am. Please check the Oneonta State athletics web site for possible postponement of the games.
Cortland (25-7-1/11-2 SUNYAC) scored single runs in the first two innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead. A fielding error by Oneonta in the first inning led to an unearned run by Cortland.
Junior Andrew Pezzuto was the beneficiary of the error by Oneonta as he reached first base when Oneonta starting pitcher
Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) couldn't secure the ball on a play at the base. Pezzuto went to third on a single through the right side by classmate John Adornetto. He was able to score on a double steal, which Oneonta tried to throw the runner out at second, but was unsuccessful.
Junior Brian Barry singled to left field to start the second inning for Cortland and was followed by a walk to sophomore Tim Panetta. Zach Graczyk then sacrificed the two into scoring position. Barry scored on a ground out to second base by the No. 9 hitter, Bryan Mistretta.
Cortland stretched its lead to 3-0 with a single run in the fifth inning. Graczyk tripled to right center field and came into score on a one-out single to right field by Matt June.
The lone for Oneonta came in the bottom of the sixth via a solo home run by senior
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane). It was Knack's team-leading third round-tripper of the season. Knack finished the game with two of Oneonta's hits in the game.
Cortland added its final run in the top of the eighth inning when Pezzuto tripled down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adornetto.
Oneonta threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs of Cortland starter Aaron Schuldt. The inning ended when Cortland was able to record an out at second base. Schuldt picked up his sixth win of the season striking out seven batters and allowing only four hits.
Tom Nagy recorded the final out to earn the save in relief of John Molloy, who started the ninth and got the first two batters before
Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens) singled up the middle.
