Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) threw a complete game, five-hitter to lead the Oneonta State baseball team to a 5-1 victory in game 2 of a SUNYAC doubleheader today versus Plattsburgh. The win for the Red Dragons earned them a split for the day after they dropped game 1, 6-4.
Oneonta (14-14/7-5 SUNYAC) carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning before breaking the game open with three runs in the inning. The big hit in the inning was a one-out, bases loaded single by junior
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) that plated a pair of runs. The final run of the inning came in on a sacrifice fly to right field by junior
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) that drove in senior
Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh), who reached on an error to load the bases before Massaroni's at-bat.
Mastrianni struck out two batters and allowed the only run in the second inning en route to winning his second game of the season.
Senior
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) was 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI and two runs scored. Knack scored Oneonta's first run in the first inning after doubling to right center field to start the bottom of the inning. Knack was moved to third by senior
Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland) before scoring on a Bouyea ground out to second base.
In the first game, Plattsburgh (15-14/7-8 SUNYAC) scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to open up a 5-1 lead. Freshman Mike Vargues led off with a double down the left field line and went to third on a one-out single by senior Damien Tyler. Vargues scored on an RBI double by senior Kris Cauchon. Tyler and Cauchon came around to score on a double to left center field by senior Pat Shaughnessy.
In the third inning, Tyler gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead when he hit a rocket over the left field fence that scored junior Pedro Gonzalez, who drew a one-out walk. Tyler finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.
Shaughnessy had a pair of hits and three runs batted in to help winning pitcher Kyle Kelly, who pitched 6-1/3 innings allowing seven hits and four earned runs. Junior Mike Doughtie came in and recorded the final two outs as Oneonta threatened in the seventh. Doughtie earned his first save of the year.
In the seventh inning, Oneonta got an RBI double by Knack that drove in
Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) from first base to cut the Cardinals lead to 6-3. With two outs, Bouyea drove in Knack for the second run of the inning. Doughtie walked the next batter and then hit pinch-hitter
Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) to load the bases. Doughtie got the punch out to end the game.
Oneonta will host SUNY Cortland this Friday in the first of a three-game series in the SUNYAC. Friday's nine-inning game begins at 3pm.
