The Oneonta State baseball team held off a late inning rally to take game 2 of today's SUNYAC doubleheader versus Oswego 5-4. Junior
Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush) struck out Alex Jurczynski with runners at first and second to record his first save of the season. In the 8th inning, it was Jurczynski who hit Hegmann's first pitch in relief over the left field fence to get Oswego (8-11/1-2 SUNYAC) to within 5-4.
Oneonta (10-9/3-3 SUNYAC) jumped out early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) and
Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) put runners at the corners with one out.
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) then drew a walk to load the bases before a balk moved everyone up one base including the game's first run by Haussel. Junior
Nate Jones (Apalachin/Seton Catholic) then singled to right field to bring home Bouyea. Knack scored on a ground out to first base by
Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island). The final run came when
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) doubled to left field to drive in Jones with the fourth run of the inning.
Freshman
Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) settled in after allowing a pair of runs in the third inning. A pair of errors led to both runs in the inning being unearned. Mastrianni left the game in the seventh recording five strikeouts en route to recording his first collegiate win.
Freshman John Rauseo was a catalyst in both games today for the Lakers. He had four hits including a double in game two while scoring two runs. In the first game he was 3-for-3 with two runs and two runs batted in.
In the first game, Oneonta trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth before the Red Dragons batted around en route to plating four runs to take a 5-3 lead. The big hit in the inning was a two-out, bases loaded single by Salvatore that scored Knack and Bouyea. Massaroni drove in the final run of the inning with a single through the left side that scored Jones from second base.
The Lakers got to 5-4 with a single run in the top of the 6th inning. Rauseo hit a sacrifice fly to knock in Steve Roman, who reached on a fielder's choice.
In the top of the 7th inning, the Lakers loaded the bases of relief pitcher Jared Bronley. After a fielder's choice by Roman drove in the first Oswego run, a third walk in the inning by Bronley loaded the bases again. Hegmann came in to relieve Bronley and he walked Rauseo, which forced in the go-ahead run for the Lakers.
Senior Mark Schaper pitched the 7th inning for Oswego and picked up his fourth save of the season. Junior Adam Bishop earned the win for the Lakers in relief of starter Dan Erne. Bishop pitched 1-1/3 scoreless innings after relieving Erne in the 5th inning.
