Baseball defeats Oswego 5-1 at home

Chris Tyson throws eight strong innings to lead Red Dragons

The Oneonta State baseball team got a solid, eight-inning performance from senior Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) in a 5-1 win at home versus Oswego today in the opening game of a weekend series with the Lakers.  Tyson was in control from the first batter en route to striking out seven hitters while scattering four hits over his outing.  Tyson is now 2-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.25.

Oneonta (9-8) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.  Senior Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) walked to start the inning, which was followed with a single to center field off the bat of junior Nate Jones (Apalachin/Seton Catholic), which got Knack to third base.  Junior Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island) then grounded out to second base, which allowed Knack to score from third.

Knack, who was on base four times today, singled and scored his second run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville).

It was Knack again that got things started in the sixth inning when he beat out a ground ball deep in the hole at second base.  Knack stole second and scored on an RBI single by Salvatore.  Salvatore's hit was followed by an error on the Oswego shortstop and a walk to Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens), which loaded the bases.  Rob Peluso (Rensselaer/Columbia) was then hit by a pitch, which forced in Salvatore with an unearned run.

Oneonta's final run came in the eighth as they benefitted from a couple of miscues by the Lakers.  Salvatore reached on an error and ended up on third when Laker's pitcher, Jon Silva, threw the ball by the first baseman on an attempted pickoff.  Salvatore scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Massaroni.

The lone run for the Lakers came in the ninth off relief pitcher Jared Bronley.  Matt Miller ended up on third base after a long fly ball to right-center field where the two Oneonta outfielders collided.  There was a question as to whether the ball was caught, but the umpire ruled that the ball was on the ground.  Miller scored on a ground out to first base.

Knack finished with two hits and three runs scored.  Salvatore and Massaroni each had two runs batted in out of the sixth and seventh spots in the order.

Oneonta is scheduled to play Oswego in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon.  Weather coming into Oneonta overnight may postpone the games to Sunday.  Please check Oneonta's website for information as well as the hotline, 607-436-2425.
