The Oneonta State baseball team fell at home today to visiting Montclair State 7-1 in non-conference action. A grand slam in the top of the ninth inning by designated hitter Kevin Bond was the final blow in an otherwise close, well-pitched game. The Red Dragons are now 8-8 overall while the Red Hawks move to 8-7 overall.
Oneonta starter,
Will Rivas (Babylon/Babylon), had a solid outing and dueled Montclair starter, Jack McDonough, pitch-for-pitch, trailing 1-0 when he left the game after seven innings of six-hit ball.
Trailing by one run in the bottom of the seventh, Oneonta rallied for a run, getting a two-out single from freshman
Charlie MacDowell (Middletown/Minisink Valley) that drove in junior
Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island), who hit a one-out double.
The Red Hawks added a single run in the eighth off losing pitcher
Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush) before the big blow in the ninth off sophomore
Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison).
The Red Dragons finished the game with five hits including a pair from senior
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane), who continues to swing a hot bat for the Red Dragons.
Stephen Nappe led the Montclair offense with three hits including two doubles.
Oneonta will be home on Friday versus Oswego for the first of a SUNYAC three-game series. Friday's nine-inning game begins at 3pm.
