The Oneonta State baseball team got a strong pitching performance in game 2 from freshman
Kyle Jordan (Levittown/Division) as they managed a split with visiting Farmingdale State today. Jordan went the distance allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out four batters to record his first collegiate win. The win in the second game for Oneonta (8-7) snapped the Rams eight-game winning streak.
Oneonta scored six runs in the bottom of the third to essentially put the game out of reach for Farmingdale (13-7). Knack had a two-run double in the inning that scored Hitt and
Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland).
Oneonta pounded out 14 hits in game two including two each from seniors
Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack) and
Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane) and junior
Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island). Knack added a triple and drove in four runs while Hitt and Salvatore drove in two runs apiece.
Jordan cruised through the first three innings not allowing a hit. In the fourth inning Farmingdale's Danny DeVito hit a ball deep in the hole at short that he legged out to just beat the throw for the first hit of the game for the Rams. It wasn't until the seventh inning that the Rams scored its only run of the game.
In game 1, the Rams scored three runs in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. Frank Scarlato had an RBI single and Ryan McAllister had a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Oneonta came back in the home half of the second inning and scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. Knack started the inning with a bunt single to third base, which was followed by single to left field by junior
Nate Jones (Apalachin/Seton Catholic). Salvatore would then sacrifice knack and Jones up one base. Knack scored the first run on a single by
Chris Massaroni (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) and Jones scored the second run on a sacrifice fly by
Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens).
After the Rams added a single run in the top of the third inning, the Red Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs. Hitt led off the inning with a triple and scored on a base hit by Plata. Plata moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Jones.
The difference in the first game was a leadoff home run in the seventh by McAllister. Michael Santagata shut the door in the bottom of the seventh to earn his third save of the season.
Oneonta is scheduled to play tomorrow at home as they host Montclair State beginning at 3:30pm.
