Baseball wins one of three vs. Fredonia

Red Dragons defeat Blue Devils 6-3 on Sunday

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Oneonta scored three runs in the top of the ninth to defeat Fredonia State, 6-3, and salvage the final game of the three-game SUNYAC weekend series at Ludwig Field.  The Red Dragons were swept yesterday by the Blue Devils as both teams opened their conference schedule.

With the score tied at 3-3 in today's game, the Red Dragons loaded the bases off losing pitcher Kyle Grey (Frewsburg) on singles by Ivan Plata (Guilderland/Guilderland), Tory Bouyea (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh), and Kevin Knack (Ghent/Ichabod Crane).

Zachary Jordon relieved Grey and induced an infield groundout for the first out of the inning. Oneonta's Matt Salvatore (Staten Island/Staten Island) then lined one to left that was dropped allowing Plata to score from third with the go-ahead run.

Zachary Levanduski (Elmira Heights/Thomas Edison) then dropped an RBI single into right and Eric Wells (Athens, PA/Athens) lofted a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.  Levanduski had three on the 15 hits for Oneonta (7-6) today.  Bouyea, Plata, Knack and Salvatore all collected two hits apiece.

Jarred Bronley (Katonah/Somers) picked up his first collegiate win in relief after Oneonta starter Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) turned in a strong outing.  Bronley recorded the final out of the eighth with the bases loaded and worked out of second-and-third jam in the ninth.  Ascher recorded seven strikeouts in his 7-2/3 innings while walking no one.

The Blue Devils trailed 3-0 before breaking through in the last of the eighth off Ascher. Singles by pinch-hitter Chris Messina (Dunkirk) and Connor Lorenzo (Rochester) and a hit-batsman loaded the bases with one out.

Oneonta head coach Benjamin Grimm removed Ascher and replaced him with Jim Hegmann (Middletown/Pine Bush), who walked Brian Sheehan (West Seneca) to force in the first Blue Devil run.

Dan Greco (Lockport) then lined a single up the middle. Oneonta second baseman Plata made a diving attempt but the ball was just out of his reach and two runs scored. Bronley then pitched out of further trouble.

In yesterday's doubleheader, Oneonta managed only two runs on the day, dropping game 1, 3-1 and game 2, 6-1.  The Red Dragons had only 11 hits total for the two games with only Bouyea registering a multi-hit game in game 1 with a single and a double in four plate appearances.

Senior Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) pitched all six innings for Oneonta in game one, striking out six batters and not allowing a walk.  Freshman Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) threw seven strong innings in game two allowing three earned runs while striking out four.

Oneonta is scheduled to play its home opener this Tuesday afternoon as they host Farmingdale for a doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
