After starting its spring trip 2-2, the Oneonta State softball team won only one of its remaining six games to return from Florida 3-7 overall. Except for the last two losses on the trip, the Red Dragons lost three games by a combined six runs.
Last Tuesday, Oneonta lost a pair of games including a 6-5 loss to preseason #17 St. Thomas. The Red Dragons left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th inning. Oneonta fell behind 3-0 to St. Thomas until coming back to tie the game in the bottom of the third. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of freshman Nicole Brieva, who hit a two-out double to drive in the first two runs of the inning. St. Johns added three runs in the top of the fifth to go ahead 6-3. The Red Dragons scored a single run in the home half of the fifth before its seventh inning rally fell short.
Earlier in the day, Oneonta fell to Wisconsin-Platteville 6-3. Stephanie Gaska, Kalyn Deso and Laura Campbell each had a pair of hits for Oneonta in the loss.
After an off day on Wednesday, Oneonta was back in action on Thursday and split a pair of games. The Red Dragons dropped a tough 6-4 decision in extra innings to William Paterson before bouncing back to defeat St. Catherine 3-2.
The Red Dragons and William Paterson were tied 2-2 after seven innings, which forced the extra playing time. William Paterson scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead, but Oneonta matched the two runs in its half of the inning to force another inning. Campbell singled to drive in Meg Beditz from second base for the first run of the inning. After being sacrificed to second base, Campbell stole third and scored on a fielder's choice. William Paterson scored two more runs in the top of the ninth and then held Oneonta scoreless for the victory. Deso had a home run in the fourth inning to account for the first two runs for Oneonta.
In the win versus St. Catherine, Gaska hit a two-run shot in the top of the second inning to give Oneonta an early lead. Brieva hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to knock in Rachel Hitt to give the Red Dragons a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the inning. St. Catherine scored a run and look like they would tie the game, but Oneonta ended the game with a 5-3-2 double play, throwing the potential tying run out at the plate. Kerry Leggett picked up her second win of the season throwing seven innings and striking out seven batters.
On the final day of the trip on Friday, Oneonta was defeated by Babson College, 20-9 in five innings and Tufts University, 12-4 in six innings. In the Babson game, Deso went deep for a third time this season and drove in four runs to pace the offense.
Gaska led the team with a .379 batting average and was one of three players to collect 11 hits. Nicole Marzillo and Deso joined Gaska with 11 hits. Deso led the team with 10 runs batted in and a .606 slugging percentage.
Leggett went 2-3 on the trip with a 2.85 earned run average while striking out 28 hitters in 27 innings.
