Oneonta, NY – The Oneonta State softball team split with visiting Union College today on Red Dragon Softball Field. They defeated the Dutchwomen 11-7 in the first game and fell in game 2, 5-2.
In the first game of the double header, the Red Dragons trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Freshmen
Shannon McQueeney started Oneonta off with a walk, followed by a
Gemma Mahoney single to left field and a
Laura Campbell single scoring McQueeney and Mahoney. Campbell advanced to third on a fielding error. She later was thrown out trying to score on a
Nicole Marzillo single. Sophomore
Stephanie Gaska knocked in Marzillo with a single and classmate
Tricia Kendziera came into pinch run for her. Kendziera later scored on a double by senior
Kalyn Deso.
Oneonta (4-8) was able to hold the Dutchwomen to no runs in the top of the fourth while plating 4 more runs of their own on a pair of doubles by
Laura Loudis and Marzillo. Singles by
Rachel Hitt, McQueeney and Kendziera helped the Red Dragons go ahead 8-4.
The Red Dragons scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a comfortable 11-4 lead. Union tried to fight back scoring three in the top of seventh but the combination of pitching between starter
Kerry Leggett and reliever
Katie O'Flynn was able to hold them. Leggett picked up her third win of the season.
The second game of the double header saw all the runs scored in the first three innings of the game. Union (6-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first. Three singles to start the inning by Lauren Hoffman (Marcy/Whitesboro), Lindsay Cohen (Suffern/Suffern) and Amanda Blake (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands) were all it took. A hit batter scored the first run and two more singles brought home the other two.
Oneonta got the score to 3-2 after a Kendziera scored in the first inning on a Deso hit and a McQueeney bomb over the right center fence in the second. Union scored 2 runs in the top of the third to secure their advantage.
Pitcher Sarah Logan (Westfield, MA/Williston Northampton School) allowed five hits in picking up her third win of the season.
