CLERMONT, FLA—The Oneonta State softball team defeated both Colby College and Lawrence University yesterday to rebound from a pair of losses on day 1 of its spring trip to Florida. The Red Dragons got two strong pitching performances to lead them to the victories, which evened its early season record at 2-2.
In the 6-1 win versus Colby, it was freshman Katie O'Flynn who went the distance allowing only three hits while striking out five batters as she recorded her first collegiate win. O'Flynn also helped herself at the plate with a two-out, two-run single to cap a four-run sixth to give the Red Dragons some breathing room.
Sophomore Stephanie Gaska had a pair of hits and two runs batted in while classmate Chandler Campbell added a pair of hits and an RBI.
In yesterday's second game, sophomore Kerry Leggett struck out nine batters en route to picking up her first win of the season, 4-1. She allowed five hits and one earned run over seven innings.
The offensive standout for Oneonta was freshman Nicole Marzillo, who went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. Gaska added two more hits as did sophomore Tricia Kendziera and freshman Brianna Rivera.
On Monday, Oneonta dropped two games to start the trip. They lost a close 3-1 game to Wisconsin-Eau Claire while falling to Manchester (IN), 10-4. The Red Dragons managed only four hits in its loss to Wisconsin while they committed five errors in its loss to Manchester. Marzillo drove in two runs versus Manchester.
