Men's lacrosse doubled up by St. Mary's 12-6

Red Dragons fall to 1-3

St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year player Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) recorded his second straight hat trick of the season as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team notched a 12-6 non-conference victory over SUNY Oneonta Monday afternoon.

Tarrant found the back of the net three times to pace the Seahawk offense while senior John Dehm (Trumbull, Conn./Middlesex School [Mass.]) scored twice and dished out an assist.  Junior Taylor Cook (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) also had a multiple-goal day for St. Mary's with two goals.

Oneonta State (1-3) claimed the first lead of the game at 13:35 as junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk completed a feed from senior Blair Hanson.  St. Mary's netted the next two goals to stake a 2-1 lead at 10:41.  The teams headed into the second period tied at 2-2 as junior Tyler Jenningsctallied an unassisted goal at 3:36.

The Seahawks (4-3) held Oneonta scoreless in the second quarter while Dehm and Tarrant scored at 7:13 and 45 seconds, respectively, to give St. Mary's a 4-2 halftime advantage.

Jennings and van de Veerdonk commanded the Red Dragon attack with two goals each while Hanson dished out two helpers.

Jennings picked up an extra-man goal 18 seconds into the start of the second half following a pass from sophomore Daniel Stern.  The Seahawks rattled off three unanswered goals as Dehm had a goal and an assist in the run to boast a 7-3 lead at 11:26.  First-year Anthony Laureano (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) stopped St. Mary's run with his third goal of the season at 7:24.  Tarrant scored the last goal of the third period at 1:44 for an 8-4 margin.

Oneonta scored the first goal of the fourth period before the Seahawks fired in three unanswered, unassisted goals for an 11-5 lead at 8:39.  Junior Alex Haffner tallied the Red Dragons final goal of the game at 5:12 before first-year Collin Brown (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson Area) notched his first collegiate tally at 2:39 for the 12-6 final.

The Seahawks won 14-of-20 face-offs behind junior Albert Mitchell's (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) 13-of-19 effort.  Mitchell, senior Peter Windsor (Towson, Md./St. Paul's), and sophomore Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School) each scooped up five ground balls as St. Mary's posted a 44-24 margin in ground balls.

Seahawk senior goalie Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) denied 14 of 35 Oneonta shots faced while senior Chris Miles (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made 15 saves on 46 St. Mary's shots.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, March 21 as the Seahawks take on Marymount (Va.) University at home in Capital Athletic Conference action at 4:00 pm.  Oneonta will face Ithaca College at home on Wednesday as well at 4:00 pm.
