The Oneonta State men's lacrosse team scored five goals in the fourth period, but came up short to nationally ranked Ithaca College today at home 13-11. The Red Dragons trailed 12-6 entering the final stanza before putting together the late rally.
Senior Blair Hanson got the Oneonta (1-4) rally started with a goal just six seconds into the fourth period with an assist from junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk, who won the face off before feeding a pass to Hanson.
The rally continued for the Red Dragons as they ripped off three more goals to cut the Ithaca (5-0) lead to 12-10 with 9:18 remaining in the game. Nick Sorrillo scored an unassisted goal before junior Tyler Jennings added back-to-back scores less than two minutes of each other.
Ithaca senior Devin Weinshank scored an insurance goal at 7:43 to push the Bomber lead back to a three goals.
Jennings scored his fourth goal of the game with 1:18 to go on a delayed penalty call to pull Oneonta to within a pair. The Red Dragons won the ensuing face off with the man up and got a shot off that was saved by Ithaca goalie Brendan Green, who finished the contest with 16 saves.
The Bombers held a 7-2 lead before Oneonta scored two late second period goals to head into halftime down 7-4. Ithaca pulled away in the third quarter, out scoring the Red Dragons 5-2.
Jennings led the Oneonta attack with his four goals while van de Veerdonk added three goals and two assists.
Senior Tom Mongelli paced Ithaca with four goals while Weinshank finished with three goals and one assist.
Oneonta will be at St. John Fisher this Saturday for a contest beginning at 1pm.
