The visiting Oneonta State Red Dragons got off to a 9-1 lead and never looked back as they defeated cross-city rival Hartwick today 15-7 at Wright Stadium. Oneonta (1-2) picks up its first win of the year while Hartwick falls to 2-2.
John DeOrdio and Blair Hanson both had three goals apiece to lead the Red Dragons. Jimmy van de Veerdonk, Daniel Stern, Tyler Jennings and Anthony Laureano all had two scores each. Scott Sorrillo scored once.
Hartwick grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the game when Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) scored at the 10:48 mark of the opening quarter. The Red Dragons would then rip off nine unanswered score to go up 9-1 with 13:11 left in the third quarter.
Schaefer would end the Oneonta scoring streak when he scored his second goal of the game to make it 9-2 at 11:16. Less than seven minutes later, Schaefer would connect with Hughes to make it a 9-3 game. After Tyler Jennings scored his second of the contest, Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) scored unassisted with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter to get the Hawks to within six goals at 10-4.
The Red Dragons tacked on five more scores in the final quarter. The Hawks would score three more times including the last two goals of the game to complete the scoring.
Schaefer scored two goals and had two assists to lead the Hawks. Cassidy, Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East), Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North), Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), and Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton, North) all had one goal each.
Nick Traino (North Andover, MA/St. John's Prep) started in goal for Hartwick and had 14 saves. Matthew Galvin came in for the last 10 seconds of the game and did not record a save.
Chris Miles also had 14 saves for the Red Dragons. Ryan Guay relieved him and played the last 3:33 of the game and recorded one save.
Oneonta had a huge advantage in shots, 61-43. They also had a slight edge in groundballs, 35-32. Van de Veerdonk had 10 of the team's groundballs. He also won 15 of 20 face offs. Max Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) collected six groundballs to lead Hartwick.
Oneonta will next play on Monday, Mar. 19 at St. Mary's of Maryland.
