Women's basketball falls at home to SUNY Geneseo

Sophomore Shannon McGinnis scored 16 points in leading visiting SUNY Geneseo to a 49-39 road victory tonight against SUNY Oneonta in SUNYAC women's basketball action.

Junior Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) led Oneonta with 18 points.  The Red Dragons forced 20 turnovers in the game and had 12 steals, but shot only 23 percent including 2-of-12 from behind the arc.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Geneseo (6-1/2-0 SUNYAC) pushed its four-point halftime lead to 13 points at 39-26.  A basket by Allison McKenna gave the Blue Knights its largest lead of the game at the 10:42 mark.

Oneonta began to inch its way back into the game, as they slowly began to cut into Geneseo's lead.  A steal and a lay up by Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) cut the Blue Knight's lead to four points at 39-35 with 4:05 remaining.

Geneseo pushed its lead back to nine points on two three-point baskets by McKenna and McGinnis.

The Red Dragons never got closer than six points over the final two minutes of the game.

McGinnis finished the game with 15 rebounds, as Geneseo held a decided advantage on the boards 50-31.  McKenna collected 11 rebounds to go with her eight points while Melissa Graham added 11 points.

Sophomore Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) reached double figures for Oneonta tonight, as she scored all 10 of her points in the opening half of play.

After Geneseo scored the game's first basket, Oneonta ran off seven unanswered including five points from Pappalardo.  Pappalardo scored 11 points in the first half to lead the Red Dragons.

Geneseo put together a 13-4 run to take a 15-11 lead with 8:31 to go in the first half.  A jumper from Paige Hill capped the run.

Over the final eight minutes of the opening stanza, the two teams were tied three times, the final tie coming at 19-19.  The Blue Knights carried a slim 25-21 lead into the locker room.

Oneonta will host Brockport tomorrow afternoon beginning at 2pm.
