Despite not scoring a field goal over the final 8:40, the visiting Rochester Yellowjackets held off the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons in non-conference women's basketball action tonight. A big first half by Rochester (6-1) was the difference in the contest, as they built a 41-28 lead that led them to the road victory.
A three-point basket by junior
Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) got Oneonta (4-4) to within six points with 2:06 remaining in the contest. Pappalardo finished the game with nine points.
Rochester iced the game by hitting 9-of-10 from the free throw line down the stretch.
Oneonta fell behind by as many as 18 points in the second half, but battled their way back into the game with tough defense. The Red Dragons forced 23 turnovers in the game, which led to 25 points.
Freshman
Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) led Oneonta with 12 points, which she scored in the first half.
Rochester held a 48-36 advantage on the boards including 18-11 off the offensive glass. Sophomore Ally Zywicki led Rochester with 23 points including 16 in the first half where she was a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc.
Oneonta jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the first 3:14 of the opening half, hitting its first three shots from the floor along with making a pair of free throws. The Red Dragons still led comfortably 12-5 on a
Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) lay up at the 15:09 mark before Rochester began to make its run.
The Yellowjackets put together a quick 8-2 run to pull within one at 14-13. The run was capped by a three-pointer by Breanna Madrazo.
Rochester continued to battle and a three-point basket by Zywicki gave them the lead at 21-20. For the half, the Yellowjackets hit 7-of-12 from behind the arc.
Oneonta will be home for the weekend, as they host Geneseo and Brockport in back-to-back SUNYAC games. The Red Dragons will play Geneseo Friday night at 6pm and Brockport on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2pm.
