Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball opens SUNYAC schedule with split

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team came away with a weekend split out west, as they defeated Buffalo State, but fell to Fredonia to open the SUNYAC portion of its schedule.  Junior Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) led the way for the Red Dragons, as she registered 17 and 14 points respectively.

Last night, Oneonta (4-3/1-1 SUNYAC) forced 25 turnovers en route to a 56-52 victory in a rematch of last year's conference championship game, also played in Buffalo.  The Red Dragons had 15 steals including eight by Pappalardo.

Oneonta outscored Buffalo 24-14 in the paint while scoring 23 points off turnovers.  The Red Dragons led by as many as 14 points in the first half thanks to a 13 unanswered points that turned a 15-14 lead into 28-14.  Oneonta carried a 28-16 lead into halftime.

Buffalo opened the second half with a 10-3 spurt that cut into Oneonta's lead.  The Bengals climbed all the way back and actually had a 47-45 lead with just under four minutes to play.

A three-pointer by Pappalardo and a pair of free throws by Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) gave Oneonta back the lead for good.  The Red Dragons converted 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch for the final of 56-52.

Sophomore Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and from the free throw line for 12 points in the contest.  She also had five rebounds and two blocks.

In today's game, Pappalardo scored 14 points, but the Blue Devils made 26 free throws to only 15 for Oneonta in a 57-47 loss.  Mulligan added 11 points in the contest, as she was the only other Red Dragon in double figures.

Oneonta trailed at the half 35-23 after only shooting 28 percent from the floor.  The Red Dragons cut into the Blue Devils lead in the second half, but couldn't get any closer than seven points with 6:17 remaining in the game when Mulligan made a pair of free throws.

Fredonia outrebounded the Red Dragons 48-34 including 19 off the offensive glass.  Junior Becky Hebert led all scorers with 22 points including 14 from the charity stripe.

Oneonta will play the first of three homes games this week on Wednesday night when they host perennial national contender Rochester.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.
