Women's basketball captures Wheaton Tip-off title

Pappalardo named Most Outstanding Player

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team held its opponents to under 33 percent shooting in back-to-back games this weekend to capture the championship of the Wheaton (MA) Tip-off tournament.  Today, the Red Dragons defeated host Wheaton 57-49 in the championship game.

Junior Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac/Lakeland) was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player while classmate Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) was named to the All-Tournament Team.  In today's contest, Schilling scored 14 points to lead Oneonta (2-1) while adding seven steals.  Pappalardo scored 13 points to go with four assists, two blocks and seven steals.

Oneonta fell behind 16-9 in the first 10 minutes of today's game before the Red Dragons ran off 13 unanswered to take a six point lead 22-16 at the 6:53 mark on a steal and layup by Schilling.

Oneonta built its five-point halftime lead into a 12 point advantage on a three-point basket by freshman Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) at 11:41 of the second half.  Loomis finished the game with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

The Red Dragons defense forced 28 turnovers and had 20 steals and eight blocks today along with shooting 46 percent from the field.  Oneonta hit 7-of-16 from behind the arc including three by Pappalardo.

Oneonta opened the tournament yesterday with a 54-48 victory over New Jersey City University.  Oneonta trailed early 10-0 before turning it around en route to grabbing a 27-18 lead at halftime.  Oneonta forced 22 turnovers in the game and collected 11 steals.

Pappalardo led Oneonta with 18 points while Schilling added 11 points, four assists and four steals.  Sophomore Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) contributed nine points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

The Red Dragons will be off for the week before traveling to Utica for a nonconference game on Monday, Nov. 26.
