Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer defeats city rival Hartwick 2-1

All the scoring in today's women's soccer came in the first half with host SUNY Oneonta coming out on the winning side of a 2-1 score versus city rival Hartwick College.  The win for Oneonta (7-3-1) was the third straight and sixth in the last seven games while Hartwick (3-6-1) drops its second straight contest.

Oneonta scored first in the 16th minute of play on one of its four corner kicks in the opening half.  Junior Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) took the kick for Oneonta and sent the ball into the box where it rolled loose.  Freshman Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) collected the ball and took a shot that deflected off the leg of junior Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and into the back of the goal for the early lead.

Five minutes later Oneonta made it 2-0 on a goal by senior Kayla Brantmeyer (Center Moriches/Center Moriches).  The goal was set up a pass by Guglielmo, who made the pass into the box where Brantmeyer carried it to the right and took a shot that landed in the left corner just inside the post.

It appeared that Oneonta would run away from the Hawks, but they kept battling.  Their goal came on a rebound after a penalty kick.  Senior Emily Thorndike stepped up to take the kick for Hartwick and was denied by Oneonta keeper Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), but the rebound came out to the foot of classmate Mackenzie Shipley, who put a shot to the back of the goal.

Murphy, who improved to 5-1 on the season, made three saves in the match while Hartwick keeper, Hope Brown made seven saves.  The Red Dragons outshot the Hawks 20-7 in the contest.

Oneonta will host SUNY Potsdam this Friday afternoon beginning at 4pm for a SUNYAC contest.  The Red Dragons are currently 3-1 in the conference and in second place.
