Dana DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) ended today's SUNYAC opener for Oneonta State in the 103rd minute to give the Red Dragons a much-needed 2-1 victory versus Oswego. The win for Oneonta (2-4/1-0 SUNYAC) broke a two-game skid while also giving them a win in their home opener for 2011.
DeSimone took a pass from sophomore
Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston) (Burlington Flats/Edmeston), who was on the left flank, and then made a move on a defender before sending a shot to the back of the goal giving Oneonta a win in front of the home crowd.
The Red Dragons fell behind early in this one as sophomore Raquel Vescio (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) accepted a pass inside the 18 from junior Shelly Bateman (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) before putting it in the top right corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.
As the game wore on, Oneonta continued to wear down the Lakers, who were having trouble clearing the ball past midfield. In the 74th minute, Oneonta had back-to-back scoring chances that were taken off the goal line by senior Alexa Bieber (Slingerlands/Guilderland). After the second back save by Bieber, freshman
Krystal Scott (Centereach/Newfield) (Centereach/Newfield) got her own rebound and put a shot into the goal to even the score at 1-1.
Oneonta, who finished the game with a 17-8 shot advantage, had the only two shots during the extra session, which included DeSimone's game-winner early in the second overtime.
Oneonta will be back to action tomorrow at home when they host its rival Red Dragons from Cortland beginning at 1pm.
