ONEONTA, NY- The Red Dragons continued its unbeaten conference streak as they took a double header at home from New Paltz Hawks.
Oneonta (15-6/8-0) was led by the pitching duo of senior
Ken Smith (Ossining/Ossining) and junior
Christopher Smith (Colonie/Colonie) on the mound.
Game one was a pitching dual as
Ken Smith (Ossining/Ossining) battled Chris Chismar for control of the game with the Red Dragons coming out on top 1-0 in the seven-inning game.
The game went scoreless through the bottom of the third until junior
Kevin Knack (Ghent /Ichabod Crane) hit a double to center advancing junior
Michael Center (Schenectady/Schenectady) to third. On the next at bat, sophomore
Michael DeCarr (Syracuse/Westhill) squeezed Center in for the only run of the game.
Chismar went the distance for New Paltz (10-12/2-5) pitching six innings and only allowing one hit.
Ken smith pitched a solid seven innings, mowing down seven, and holding New Paltz to only four hits and no runs to raise his record to 3-0 for the Red Dragons this season while lowering his ERA to 1.80.
In game two, it was SUNYAC & ECAC Pitcher of the Week
Christopher Smith's (Colonie/Colonie) turn to take the mound for the Red Dragons.
New Paltz got on the board in the top of the fourth after Jake Cameron reached second after hitting a deep fly ball hit off the right fielder's glove. In the next at bat, Matt Prescia hit a bloop single into center to put the Hawks up 1-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Oneonta native
Jonathan Wolfanger (Oneonta/Oneonta) rocketed the ball down the left field line picking up a double to start the offense. Senior
Pete Lindner (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) walked and Center reached off of a catcher's interference bringing up Knack. Knack, who had the only hit in game 1 came up big again as he smashed a triple into the right field corner clearing the bases and putting Oneonta up 3-1.
Oneonta added to their lead in the sixth as sophomores
Bryan Marotta (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa),
Mike Mascari (Syracuse/Westhill), and
Dean Haussel (Sound Beach/Miller Place) each singled. Haussel had the only RBI of the inning when he drove in pinch-runner
Cody Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack).
Junior
Chris Tyson (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) came into the game in the sixth and pitched 3-2/3 innings of scoreless relief surrendering only one hit to pick up his fourth save of the year.
Christopher Smith (Colonie/Colonie) picked up his third win for Oneonta, going 5 1/3 innings only allowing two hits, one run, and recorded five strikeouts lowering his ERA to 1.82.
The third game of conference the conference matchup will be played tomorrow at home on Red Dragon Field beginning at 12:00pm.
